Ethiopian coffee exports require specific documentation for customs clearance. Understanding these requirements ensures smooth importing.

Essential Export Documents

Bill of Lading (B/L)

The primary shipping document serving as receipt of cargo, contract of carriage, and document of title. Required for customs clearance at destination.

  • • Shows shipper, consignee, and notify party details
  • • Specifies number of bags, weight, and container number
  • • Original B/L required for cargo release at destination

ICO Certificate of Origin

Issued by the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority, this International Coffee Organization certificate confirms Ethiopian origin and is required by many importing countries.

  • • Confirms country of origin for tariff purposes
  • • Required for EU, USA, and many other markets
  • • Includes grade, weight, and exporter details

Phytosanitary Certificate

Issued by Ethiopian Plant Health Regulatory Directorate, confirming the coffee is free from pests and diseases. Required for agricultural imports into most countries.

  • • Confirms compliance with importing country plant health requirements
  • • Valid for specific shipment only
  • • Must accompany original shipping documents

Commercial Invoice

Details the transaction between buyer and seller, including price, terms, and product description. Used for customs valuation.

  • • Shows agreed price and Incoterms
  • • Describes coffee grade, process, and origin
  • • Required for duty calculation at destination

Weight and Quality Certificates

Independent verification of shipment weight and quality, issued by licensed inspection companies.

  • • Confirms net weight at loading
  • • Quality certificate shows grade and defect count
  • • Useful for insurance claims if discrepancies arise

Organic Certification

EU Organic, USDA Organic, or equivalent certification from accredited bodies for organic-certified lots.

Fair Trade Certification

Fairtrade International or Fair Trade USA certification for qualifying cooperative coffees.

Rainforest Alliance

Sustainability certification for farms meeting RA environmental and social standards.

Cup of Excellence

Competition certificates for award-winning lots from Ethiopia's COE programme.

Import Compliance by Market

European Union

  • ICO Certificate of Origin required
  • Phytosanitary certificate with EU-specific endorsements
  • EUDR compliance documentation (from December 2024)
  • Organic: EU organic certificate if claiming organic status

United States

  • FDA prior notice required before arrival
