ECX Contracts vs Direct Sourcing
The Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX) handles a large share of domestic coffee trading and sets reference pricing for the market. Specialty buyers seeking traceable, lot-specific coffee increasingly work with exporters sourcing directly from washing stations and cooperatives outside the ECX system, which allows for station-level or farm-level traceability that pooled ECX lots typically cannot provide.

Certificates of Origin & Phytosanitary Clearance
Two documents are central to customs clearance for green coffee imports: the Certificate of Origin (CO), which confirms Ethiopia as the country of origin, and the phytosanitary certificate, which confirms the shipment meets plant-health import requirements. ICO member countries may also require an ICO Certificate of Origin specifically.

Issued by Ethiopia's plant health authority, confirming the shipment is free from regulated pests before export.
Bill of Lading & FOB Djibouti Logistics
Ethiopian coffee exports almost universally route through the port of Djibouti by road, since Ethiopia is landlocked. Under FOB Djibouti terms, the exporter's price covers transport to Djibouti and loading onto the vessel; the buyer arranges and pays for ocean freight, marine insurance, and destination-side handling from that point. The Bill of Lading (B/L), issued once the coffee is loaded, is the key shipping document buyers need for customs clearance and cargo release at destination.
