Ethiopian Coffee Export Route
Ethiopia is landlocked, so all coffee exports travel overland to the Port of Djibouti before shipping to international destinations. This adds a trucking leg to every shipment but is a well-established route with reliable transit times.
The typical export journey involves consolidating containers in Addis Ababa, trucking to Djibouti (approximately 900 km), port handling and customs clearance, then ocean freight to the destination port.
Estimated Lead Times
| Stage | Duration |
|---|---|
| Order confirmation to container stuffing | 5-10 days |
| Trucking Addis Ababa to Djibouti | 3-5 days |
| Port handling and vessel loading | 3-7 days |
| Ocean transit to Northern Europe | 14-18 days |
| Ocean transit to US East Coast | 25-30 days |
| Ocean transit to US West Coast | 30-35 days |
| Destination port clearance | 2-5 days |
Total door-to-door lead times typically range from 4-6 weeks for European destinations and 6-8 weeks for North American destinations. Peak season congestion at either end can extend these timelines.
Shipping Terms and Options
FOB Djibouti
Most common term for Ethiopian coffee. Exporter handles inland transport and port costs. Buyer arranges ocean freight and insurance.
- • You control shipping line selection
- • Flexibility on destination port
- • Responsibility transfers at vessel loading
CIF Destination
Exporter arranges freight and insurance to your port. Simpler for buyers new to direct importing.
- • Single price to destination
- • Less logistics management
- • Insurance included in price
Container and Packaging
Ethiopian coffee is typically shipped in 60kg jute or GrainPro-lined bags, loaded into 20-foot containers:
- Standard 20ft container: Holds approximately 275-300 bags (16.5-18 metric tonnes).
- GrainPro lining: Recommended for specialty lots to maintain freshness during transit.
- Vacuum packing: Available for micro-lots and high-value coffees at additional cost.
Smaller orders can be consolidated with other buyers' shipments, though this adds complexity and potential delays.
Planning Your Orders
To ensure smooth logistics:
- Order new crop coffees as early as possible to secure space on preferred vessels
- Allow buffer time in your inventory planning for potential delays
- Communicate your preferred ETAs clearly so we can optimise booking timing
- Consider warehousing at origin if you need to delay shipment
